The Dignity that Comes With Dancing

Online interactions have always been a part of our daily lives, but since the pandemic has occurred, we as a community have relied on our devices constantly to keep connection with society. Although many of our sports have ended this year due to this pandemic, I have found plenty of ways to stay active. During the first week of being under quarantine, I was starting to go crazy -- I was on the couch quite a bit watching television, catching up on movies and checking out social media - I quickly lost sight of being productive. As the days progressed, I decided to start doing some research on “the google”. How fortunate are we to live during these modern times that allow such incredible technology! I found some fun ways to keep active -- Dance Team came out of the blue, and gave me challenging workouts. In fact, I never realized how much the art of dance has impacted my life. In reading this article, my wish for all of you readers is to sit back, take some notes and some meaningful breaths…..you won’t be disappointed.

The word Quarantine is starting to drive me crazy! As the third week of social isolation came around, I was starting to get a little antsy. I had not moved around in ages other than walking my dog… I’ve worked on my drawing skills and cooking skills, but those rampages soon ended and I was stuck. Thankfully dance saved the day!! I am a part of the Dance Team at the Francis Parker School, and fortunately we are still able to continue the program at home. We are a group of dancers who perform at school sporting events and almost every other week we learn new choreography. I can definitely say there’s been a change in my routine and daily practices. The act of starting the team up through google hangouts, the database we have been using, gave me tremendous hope during these times. Not only was I going to get my muscles moving again, but I was going to see my friends and coach. What better way to entertain myself? This is an amazing opportunity for us as a team --and thankfully, after doing some workouts, I'm starting to get in the swing of things again. For the first day of class we did a cardio workout with “the fitness marshall” who you may have heard of. This was so much fun!! Even though I was having a hard time getting the movements down at first I had to realize that I was by myself and no one was watching unless my parents walked by of course. But I can now live up to that famous quote “dance like no one’s watching” because that's how I’ve felt for the past month and a half of practice.

Other than dance continuing, I heard that other sports have been keeping in contact as well; such as cross country. Studies have shown that any physical activity can lower stress, anxiety, ADHD, etc.. and I abide by this natural medicine because I struggle with stress and anxiety, as all of us do from time to time. Exercise is also known to improve your memory, help you sleep better, and boost your overall mood. So it’s important to remember, everyday go outside for at least two minutes, take a deep breath and be present. Trust me, this really helps! Below are some links if you ever want to challenge yourself, and they are the exact videos we watched! These will definitely bring a smile to your face!

Hack or Fact

Other than dance I have found some extremely funny hacks that surprisingly work. Every week I will post either one hack or fact, just to keep on the bright side of things during this pandemic. So be prepared every week! Right now I thought this hack would come in handy. Our community doesn't have any accessibility to get a haircut, or even your pooch a grooming appointment, but this hack is all for those who have a pet at home. As I was watching youtube I came upon a video of a lady with an interesting idea to say the least. All you need for this hack is:

  • Saran wrap

  • Peanut butter

  • Some clippers for your dog

The main point of this hack is to clip your dog's nails, because the last thing we want is your dog to be suffering for not having access to a groomer.

Dancing has always been a part of my life, and now that we are able to do it online it has given me the freedom of not only exercise of the body, but exercise of the mind.
