We can certainly call these times crazy, and as a community, we have been truly trying to make the best out of this situation. It is interesting to see how people are celebrating birthdays with “drive-bys”, hitting those sick beats from peoples’ buildings going from downtown San Diego to Italy, and even clapping for those in the workforce during this pandemic. Our community is trying to bring joy in any capacity during this challenging time.

A Quarantined Birthday

Optimistically speaking, the best part of this pandemic is that it is giving us all the opportunity to reset and have a “timeout.” The joy of spending quality time with family and letting our minds relax has allowed me to grasp a more creative flow and a different perspective of life. From our boredom, I have definitely discovered countless ways to make a change. As peoples’ birthdays have rolled around I have witnessed many videos of drive-bys which are seriously so cute! I feel bad for those who have to celebrate without being able to go out or even see family, but that's where facetime comes in, right? But overall I am glad that we are finding ways to get around this quarantine and especially to keep us busy because I haven't left the house in ages.

A Worldwide Sense Of Community

I saw a story in the news about two weeks ago about how there have been countless nights of partying downtown- not together, but rather in their apartment complex balconies. When I saw this it brought a smirk to my face because who knew we would end up dancing on the balconies, as well as putting strobe lights on the deck to keep ourselves sane and celebrate? Honestly what could be a better time to do that than right now?! Also, as of today (today is April 26), in Coronado, there was a pull-up wagon where people just started singing in neighborhoods. Literally, that is so cool! This gives us time to go on our porch or balcony, get some sun, and just be in the moment. Could they maybe stop by my house?

Thinking globally, though, there have been many similar instances such as in Italy, New York, Spain, etc. Many places which are being hit really hard right now with this virus. They have played music on their balconies as well, and have even clapped for those entering the nursing workforce. A few weeks ago I saw a video on Facebook that was recorded in Italy where a soprano opera singer sang the song “Time to Say Goodbye” in her apartment complex. After watching the video, her voice inspired me and brought a jump to my step, reminding me that we are so lucky to have this opportunity to reflect and make memories with family. I bet this was an amazing surprise to the neighbors around her as well, and this was her ultimate goal as she stated it was to “boost people's morale and hope.” Looking around the globe as well, there have been countless remarks and honor towards those risking their health and time for the sick. This is truly beautiful to hear the claps and pot clangs from everyone’s’ homes and our support that is shown no matter where we are.

Finally

Even though we, as a community, have been blocked from the world because of this quarantine, we are finding ways to go around it. Try to imagine when we are older, sitting in our rocking chairs and reminiscing on this interesting year, creating smiles, laughs, and maybe even a few tears from the memories and experiences we will never forget.
