In quarantine, all of the live music venues that I would frequent have been closed down, leaving me without the concerts I love so much. My parents are avid devourers of classical music, so when the opportunity of going to a “Mainly Mozart” outdoor drive-in concert came up, they were excited by the prospect of experiencing live music again.

I have been to drive-in movie theatres before, and this experience was quite similar. There were six feet cone markers between each car as to maintain social distancing (which secured visibility for everyone) and those involved with the production who came in contact with the public diligently wore their face masks. There was a person who sold snacks and drinks, though I would encourage you to bring your own as well! T-shirts were also available to support the event, with a decal of Mozart in a red car on the front.

Even if classical music is not your typical music choice, if you appreciate live music of any kind, I recommend securing tickets and driving out one weekend. The performance was a perfect length for kids as well as adults, long enough for the music to have an effect, but not so long as to be boring. I would actually suggest, if you are interested in introducing your kids to classical music, going to one of these unique concerts before a real theater, as it felt much more relaxed and communal in this setting. Since everyone is in their own car, you can check your phone or grab a drink if you need a little distraction to help break up the performance.

The musicians themselves were fantastic! Every Vivaldi piece was played with confidence and precision, emoting delicately through to the final note. The speakers amplified the music to the very back row of the cars, with the additional option of using your radio to listen. It was very professional and lovely to hear live music again, especially in the warm sun with a cold drink. There were four different pieces played, with an encore at the audience’s request. If you miss live music venues and are searching for a taste of that, go to one of their drive-in festivals or concerts for an hour and a half!
